I Fear that the Human Race is Doomed....

I know, this isn't quite science and it certainly isn't fiction, but when members of the same, dare I say race?, do something so totally insane and lacking in any thing resembling foresight, makes me wonder if the race is worth preserving.....

What has got me in a tither today?  Well as many of you may not know there seems to be a systematic effort to decimate antiquities in central America.    Case in point Belize, several months ago a construction crew raze a 2300 year old Maya pyramid.  Why?  They were part of a road construction company and needed crushed rock for a new road bed!

Ready for more....oh yeah, more and worse....

Peru, a complex of 5000 year old  pyramids, yeah plural, there were  12, were demolished by two construction companies.  One of the oldest constructions ..... gone.   Oh and to make matter worse if that is at all possible, the site was later burned by several clandestine groups that entered the site

What the hell is going one?!!!  This is insane!

Yeah, I know. Need I say anything about what was coming out of my mouth when I learned of this. Needless to say, smeg, feckers, gits, goits, etc were not a part of my vocabulary at that time. Words such as vengeance, give me the power of Piccolo, etc however were the beginning, and it got a lot more violent and worse from there. And I'm the one that gave up on the race long ago. I won't put here what I would like to say, for obvious reasons. But yeah, just one day, just one, with the power of a Z fighter, and this idiocy I guarantee would never happen again, NOT EVER.

This reminds me of the time the caretaker of a historic Chinese temple hired some "professional" cleaners to do some cleaning in the temple. They used strong industrial chemicals to do their job and in the process, completely cleared the walls of centuries-old paintings.

In their case, though it's easy to blame the workers, the caretaker was quite negligent in not providing oversight and clear instructions.

Very true Obee. However in this case, that isn't the case. This is just blatant disregard for the past and history unknown, where as in your example, someone was simply asleep at the switch and wasn't watching what the workers were doing. Though I do feel that those workers should have been punished in the extreme, (and I don't know if they were or not), as a professional should realize when they are destroying ancient work. But again, in this case, it was blatant destruction of the past for the sake of what, people being too damn lazy and cheap to get a the trucks on the road to go get what they needed.
I'll bet if I went and painted eyebrows on that eyebrow-less ugly woman in that painting known as the Mona Lisa, there would be a world wide outcry. And that would not be destroying it, not like this. Destroy ancient relics of the Mayan past and all seems peachy and no one says shit about it. Who knows what knowledge may have been destroyed once again that wasn't uncovered yet there. And I'm going to shut up now before I do go off on a tangent and tear here. Not against you brother, but against the idiots that allowed this, and the disrespectful $*&%^&$$^&^% that actually did it.

Oh I definitely agree that there is a huge difference between the acts (deliberate vs ignorant), but then even in the temple case I think it's much a case of the workers being ignorant and not knowing (or caring) what the potential value of those temples are.

Going on a tangent here... it's only a matter of time before the rain-forests are completely deforested. The low class uneducated people don't know or care how important that ecosystem is. They just know that clearing the land will earn them a wage. It's that same level of ignorance that led to the destruction of those temples.

I hate to be melodramatic, but at least this instance doesn't drip evil. I agree where was the caretaker but also, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to realize that what you are wiping off the walls is not graffiti....sigh....

very well stated Kallimis!

boy that is a tough nut son. It almost begs the question, if they DID know, would they stop? Now I live in a fishing community and I have witnessed the over fishing and decline of many of the "inexhaustible" species and the total destruction of a viable ecosystem that can be caused by purse nets and dragers. People could clearly see that the catches were getting smaller and the fish sizes shorter, but they kept right on with the same practices until drastic measures were put in place. Now am I suggesting the same in the other instants mentioned? No, but I think the mention of a wage is a lot closer to the point, and unless an equitable solution to both sides is found, these mind numbing occurrences will continue.
